I am a historian of Britain at NYU.

I studied European history at Northwestern University. My work intersects with urban history, intellectual history, and the history of science.

I’m especially interested in how political cultures work and change, and have written about meritocracy and technocracy, radicalism and social democracy, neo-conservatism and neo-liberalism.

My current research project looks at British historical writing since the nineteenth century. How did this national frame of reference deal with scales and connections that far exceed the nation?

I am currently chair of the Department of History at NYU.
